Shocked , là, ils m'ont complètement bluffé, pas eu le temps de réfléchir pour passer le pré-order drunken
ça m'en fait 4 en attente, avec Elsenborn Ridge, Alaska's War et Artic Front, mais comment résister à ça :

Hi Steve, the Cassino module includes extensive special rules for the massif and the type of the towns and villages that were in the area, and for Cassino town itself both pre and post destruction rules are present. The area of the map stretches from Cairo in the north to Sant’Angelo in the south, and from the edge of Mount Trocchio to the east to just beyond Pignataro and the far slopes of Colle Sant Angelo in the west. About quarter of the map represents the Cassino massif with the rest of the map covering the Liri Valley.

Deciding on the extent of the map boundaries took some considerable time, but after quite extensive research the area depicted on the final map was decided up on as it allowed all the major actions around Cassino to be depicted and also gave the gamer a wide range of scenarios and terrain to experience.

The purpose of the Cassino operation was the opening up of the Liri Valley as this offered the only avenue north that would allow the allies to exploit their superiority in armour. The scenarios recreate all the key actions of the battles, and the campaigns offer the opportunity for the players to refight the campaign using alternative tactics. Historically the battle did become a battle of attrition that reflected the tactics of the First World War. This was not without reason at the time, especially for the initial US attack. The allies had cracked the German codes and were well aware of the pressure the Germans were under in repelling the allied assault – it did appear at the time that ‘one last push’ would be successful; indeed this was also the opinion of Kesselring, the German commander! The second and third assaults by the New Zealand Corp might have succeeded in tipping the balance; however the delay of the assault and the introduction of the Fallschirmjagers allowed the Germans to recover sufficiently to hang on. The final push in May was overwhelming and despite being costly for the allies there was little doubt it was going to be ultimately successful.

In terms of how the game plays – it will allow you to replicate the grinding assaults if that is your tactical choice, and I submitted a daily content piece on ‘tactical assault’ that creates a more ‘dynamic’ assault process for that very purpose. However because the PG system recreates historical results pretty well, repeating the actions of the past will yield similar results. The challenge, of course, is coming up with more successful tactics than were originally employed, as in most PG games it comes down to movement and manoeuvre. In the majority of successful actions that we gamed on the massif itself, taking time to move and counter-move even on the restrictive massif was often time well spent.

Both sides in the scenarios offer challenges, the allies generally have the numerical advantage and plenty of artillery and air support. The Germans have some very high quality units, usually in good defensive terrain but you always never seem to have quite enough units to cover all the areas needed. In fact I found the most difficult part of playing Cassino is judging the often necessary German counter-attacks needed on a key positions, go too early and the allies generally have enough firepower to hurt you, go too late and you might not win it back.

I am pleased with the accuracy and aesthetics of the map but the bottom line on this project was always how the game play does. I have tried hard to accurately recreate the battles of Cassino, but first and foremost I am a gamer, and the game had always been at the heart of the design process.

Doug McNair has spent quite some time developing this game, and the general consensus on this board it that since Doug has been leading the development of PG games the quality has improved. I am confident that Doug has made some improvements on my original design and that the final project should be a lot of fun!

Hi Aaron, here is a quick summary of the campaign system for PG Cassino – this is from the original design document I submitted to Avalanche. I am sure Doug during development has made some improvements so the final system may be a little different.

There are two campaigns presented in Cassino ’44: Gateway to Rome:

Campaign One – 24th Jan to 9th Feb. This 16-day campaign covers the US 34th & 36th Divisions supported by the 756th Tank Battalion’s attack on the Gustav Line. The German forces include a mix of Infantry and Panzer Grenadier units, later also some paratroopers. This campaign can have a maximum of 13 battles depending on the players’ choices.

Campaign Two – 11th to 18th May. This 8-day campaign covers the start of Operation Diadem. The combined forces of Polish, Indian and British troops attempt to break through the Gustav Line. The Germans defend with Paras, Infantry, Panzer Grenadiers and assorted support units.

The campaign system was designed with two simple criteria: first each campaign battle will be playable within a single gaming session, and secondly the ‘campaign management’ element of the game should take no longer than 10 minutes for each campaign day. The second criteria has been met and mostly the first has as well although some of the battles in the second campaign can take longer depending on players’ choices.

Each campaign has a mini-map dividing the gaming map into areas, for example in Campaign One the map is divided up into the following areas: Liri Valley East, Liri Valley North, Liri Valley West, Cassino Massif North, Cassino Massif South, Cassino and German Reserve area. Players allocate their starting forces to their controlled areas.

For each campaign the players are allocated a number of ‘attack chits’ for example in the first campaign the Allies get 11 and the Germans get 2. Each campaign day the player secretly record if they are going to attack and whether it will be a day or night attack. These ‘attack chits’ represent the ability of each side to mount offensive actions.

The attacking player expends ‘Campaign points’ to ‘activate’ deployed formations for an attack. Units are based in historically formations, for infantry, grenadiers and paras this is usually by battalion. Various support units can also be ‘activated’ these are usually company strength.

For example in Campaign One the US player has 6 ‘Campaign Points’ to expend for the upcoming day battle, a potential purchase could be the following: 4 points to ‘activate’ two battalions of the 141st from the 36th Infantry Division. 2 points for ‘activating’ the 756th Tank battalion. The German player does not have to ‘activate’ units defending the attacked area but can expend some ‘Campaign Points’ to reinforce an area with additional units, but wont at this stage necessarily know which area has been selected for attack. Campaign Points are expended secretly and revealed simultaneously.

Each player has a pool of artillery and airplanes, which can be allocated for any battle. Each battle lasts at least 24 turns but has a variable end mechanism

This is of course just a quick summary and there are several other factors, such as weather, operational redeployment, delayed entry of formations, attrition, replacements but I hope the above gives you some insight.

si ça fonctionne bien, on pourra facilement l'adapter à d'autres boites, comme Beyond Normandy, voire créer nos propres mini-campagnes ...

Bigger Cassino Seems that Panzer Grenadier: Cassino '44 grew a little bit. With 990 playing pieces and four full-sized maps, it will be the largest game in the Panzer Grenadier series, so on July 29th, the price rises from $49.99 to $74.99. Get those orders in now to lock in the lower price; all existing orders will be honored at the old price.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/483959

Very Happy
